Credit: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Of these four ocean floor scans, the top two panels clearly show shipwrecks, but the shipwrecks in the bottom two panels, marked by red arrows, could easily be mistaken for natural features. A model that automatically maps all shipwrecks over a large area can reduce the time and cost needed to look for wrecks, either with underwater drones or human divers. This imagery contains huge areas with no shipwrecks, as well as the occasional shipwreck.įinding shipwrecks is important for understanding the human past-think trade, migration, war-but underwater archaeology is expensive and dangerous. The imagery I used extends to a little over 14 miles (23 kilometers) from the coast and to a depth of 279 feet (85 meters). It also has a large public database of different types of imagery collected from around the world, including sonar and lidar imagery of the seafloor. I also needed to teach the model what the natural ocean floor looks like.Ĭonveniently, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration keeps a public database of shipwrecks. To do this, I needed lots of examples of shipwrecks. It was also important to teach the computer how to tell the difference between wrecks and the topography of the seafloor. If you like open world survival games, I would suggest you to give this game a try.The first step in creating the shipwreck model was to teach the computer what a shipwreck looks like. Although I got this game from a giveaway, in my opinion, it's currently worth the money. It's only problem is the lack of content, but I feel like it has the potential of being an excelent game if the developers add some extra stuff to it. You are also able to craft various gadgets such as automatic drills that mine resources and harpoon turrets that are quite useful.ģ)The inventory system is also a little underdeveloped, but it's not a big problem. I've only increased the size of my base by a few tiles just to have some extra space for crops and chests. The map is randomly generated, but it's not infinite and doesn't take that long to explore.Ģ)There is also a base building mechanic in this game, but it doesn't seem all that necessary to progress. There are a few various types of sea creatures: small fish, sharks, dolphins, barracudas and a few other creatures that I would not like to spoil. Now, I would like to tell you about the things I didn't really like about this game.ġ)This game doesn't have that much content. Yes, this game's story is quite simple, but it's an underwater survival game, so I'm not complaining. You will find various recources such as coal and various ores, shipwrecks and loot chests, and most importantly pieces of your submarine, which brings me to the story.ģ)The story is as follows:you are a diver who had their submarine break and your main objective is to find 9 pieces of the submarine, assemble it and swim up to the surface. Exploration is also a big part of this game. You will mine resources, craft new equipment to take less damage from various predators, have more oxygen, move faster and be able to go deeper down, you will also use weapons (knife and harpoon gun) to hunt fish or grow your own crops in your base to get food and later cook it using coal to make it more effective. It has pixelated graphics, but this is noticeable only when you're right next to an object.Ģ)In terms of gameplay, it is similar to Minecraft in a few ways. First, I would like to go over what I like about this game.ġ)In terms of graphics, it looks quite nice and runs well even on your grandma's PC. The old /r/patientgamers Essential Games ListĪt first glance FarSky may look like a cheap Subnautica clone (it actually isn't because it came out earlier than Subnautica), but in reality it's a very nice underwater survival game.
